Free Desktop Pets, and What “Free” Actually Costs

None of these is dishonest, but they behave very differently. Open source trades money for effort. A one-time unlock trades a single payment for a complete feature set. Per-character pricing trades a low entry point for a total that grows without a ceiling.

The comparison people usually run is the wrong one. It isn't “free versus paid” — it's how many characters do you want, and do you want to choose them yourself?

• Importing any VRM 0.x or 1.0 model — your OC, a commissioned avatar, a purchased model;
• Motions, dances and stages, managed in the workshop with 3D preview;

VPet Simulator: free, and genuinely open

The strongest fully free option (GitHub: LorisYounger/VPet, Apache-2.0, 6,678 stars, around 199MB). It's free on Steam, the Workshop is active, and interactions cover head pats, feeding, picking up and wall climbing.

• Works: no payment at any point, source code available, and the project is still being committed to;
• Doesn't: characters are 2D sprite sheets, so you can't import your own 3D model; chat needs your own API key with no voice or memory; and the community reports memory use and occasional crashes;
• Also: the setup is involved enough that the project's own documentation says so. That's the “free costs time” part, and it's real.

Desktop Mate: free base app, paid characters

The base app is free on Steam and includes one character; additional characters are DLC at around $14.99 each, with more than 36 available as of July 2026.

• Works: the free character is a complete experience — voice, reactions, alarms — and the paid characters are high quality;
• Doesn't: character costs accumulate, and there's no official way to use a character you already own the model for;
• Also: the install is over 1GB, worth knowing if you're short on disk.

Shimeji and Oneko: free for two decades

The oldest options in this list are also the cheapest. Shimeji (2008, around 26.57MB in download-site listings) still has active forks, and Oneko — the cursor-chasing cat from 1989 — is the original desktop pet, still running on Linux, macOS, Windows and web pages today.

Verdict: free, tiny and charming, with no chat, no 3D and no dancing. Perfect as a second pet, or as the whole thing if you're on very old hardware. Install from GitHub, Flathub or official sources only.

Downloading free pets safely

Free software is where repackaged installers concentrate, because “free desktop pet download” is a valuable search term. Four checks:

1. Official sources only. The developer's site, Steam, the Microsoft Store, GitHub releases or Flathub. If a page offers a “high-speed download” for a free app, check the domain before clicking.
2. Watch the installer. Uncheck anything optional — desktop pet downloads are a common vector for bundled adware.
3. Check version and size afterwards. If they don't match the official listing, remove it.
4. Be careful with AI-generated executables. They're more likely to trigger antivirus warnings, sometimes wrongly, so verify where the file came from rather than assuming a clean scan means safety.
